There have been several people that have recently inquired as to how I am doing this. Even though most don’t say the exact words, it is clear they are curious about the financial piece of this Journey. It is clear because they usually begin the question with, “This is really none of my business…” Or, “Can I ask you a personal question?” Which, by the way, I don’t know why our society views money as a “personal” topic. I guess I’m just weird…and/or an open book. 😉
For those of you that have been following my blog this whole time, some of the following will be a summary of things you have already read. I apologize. Some of the people that have asked the above questions have not been following the whole year. With that being said, there are some details I am adding that most of you haven’t heard. 😉
When I made the choice to listen to my “calling” (exactly a year ago) and go to Brazil, a HUGE shift happened inside of me. South America and Brazil were no where on my radar! This calling I felt/heard was so powerful, I didn’t know what was going to happen. For all I knew, I was going to end up living in Brazil. Even though my Faith at the time was wobbly at best, I knew I had to do this. So, I sold almost everything I owned, paid off all of my bills and went to Brazil with a few thousand dollars in my bank account. When you are single with no kids and own your own business, this isn’t a difficult thing to do, financially. And yes, having a business that I can run from anywhere in the world helped. I actually had a couple of clients that I skyped with while in Brazil.
I would definitely not call my sabbatical and Spiritual Journey I have been on the past year a vacation or “world travel”! From some of the questions I have gotten lately, it has become apparent that I have not been very clear on a few aspects of this Journey. For example, I, at no time, thought to myself, “Self, let’s go find God in Fiji (or Brazil, as it were)!” EVERY step of this Journey over the past year has been Divinely guided. I know this is going to be hard to believe for some of you, and that’s ok. I get messages….whether you want to say they are from God, the angels, the Universe, my higher Self, etc. I don’t care. All I know is they are not coming from my ego brain! And in each location, whether it was Brazil, with my family in IL, or at the Ashram in CA, the focus was God and healing mySelf. It has not been about site-seeing and doing touristy things. This makes a HUGE financial difference, I imagine. The majority of my time has been spent in meditation, prayer, and Seva over the past year. This doesn’t take much money. 😉
More specifically, while in Brazil, I first went through a program that placed me in a family’s home. I taught them English, they provided a room and meals. That program felt expensive to me. And yet, I’m sure it was much less than if I stayed in a hotel and ate out every meal the whole time. The last month in Brazil, I stayed in a hotel. Brazil is very inexpensive! I paid the equivalent of $45 per night there and that included three home-cooked meals everyday! The Ashram in California cost $3 per day. And that included all meals. So, the few thousand dollars I had in my account when I left the States 10 months ago, supported me about a year. It also helped that I had a few loving and generous family members and friends that opened their homes to me in between trips.
I’m sure the learning and healing will continue the rest of my life, however now it’s time to figure out where I want to settle down again and live this amazing life I have created. I’m not going to repeat what I wrote in the last blog. So, those of you that haven’t read it will have to go back and read at least one post. 😉 What I will add is this… My parents gave us some of our inheritance in the form of stocks almost a year ago. I hadn’t touched them because I thought I may need it when this Journey was over and I needed to get set up somewhere. Well, my trip to Italy isn’t just for fun. I am going there to see if that is where I want to live. I decided that met my criteria. 😉 So, I sold some of those stocks for my Italy trip. I will still be quite frugal while in Italy. I have learned there is a great deal you can experience without spending a ton of money!!
If any of you are interested in a non-conventional form of travel, I encourage you to check out some of the following…
1. Stay in one of Amma’s Ashrams. There are several all over the world. www.amma.org
2. Apply for “wwolfing”. This is an opportunity to work on a farm in exchange for a room and food. It’s available all over the world! www.wwoofing.net
3. Couchsurfing. If you like meeting people and want to be a little more adventurous, this may be the way to go. It’s free. You literally stay at other people’s homes. Sometimes you sleep on their couch and often times they actually have a bedroom available. I have not done this yet. And, I think this is how I will be traveling for part of my time in Italy. I LOVE connecting with the locals, learning about them and their culture! www.couchsurfing.org
4. Air bnb. Although I have not utilized this form of stay yet, I have a couple of friends that have opened their homes to travelers. This is another less expensive way of traveling around the world. www.airbnb.com
I’m sure there are many other ways to travel inexpensively. These are the ones that I have researched.
Again, I share all of this in the hopes that it will inspire some of you to look at things and/or experience things a little differently. I am not saying this is the path for everyone! I do feel there is a lot more one could glean from this post. It’s not just about travel and money. 😉
Please do not hesitate to contact me with questions! It’s free! 😉
All in Love,
